Academy - Berlin/London

alt

The Listening Academy is an independent research academy focusing on listening as a philosophical, artistic, social and somatic issue. This entails a relation to sonic, performative and ecological practices, sound studies research, and experimental pedagogy. The Academy offers a generative and nurturing framework for researchers and practitioners to engage in collaborative exchange and the sharing of knowledge, as well as workshopping new directions in sound studies and related practices. This includes intensive group sessions, lectures by invited guests, and material explorations.

The summer session is scheduled to take place from July 19th to 23rd. In order to contend with current travel restrictions, and to explore modes of listening and learning together, the summer session will take place simultaneously in Berlin and in London. Each location will bring together a group of participants to exchange and develop activities, while linking up through lectures and discussions. The Berlin session is hosted by Errant Sound project space and led by Budhaditya Chattopadhyay (independent scholar), Brandon LaBelle (Bergen Art Academy), and Carla J. Maier (independent scholar). In London, Lucia Farinati (Sound Threshold; independent scholar) leads the session in collaboration with invited guests. A number of invited speakers will also join online to offer critical input, including Rayya Badran (American University Beirut).

We welcome applications from doctoral and post-doctoral researchers as well as practicing artists from a diversity of backgrounds and communities interested in sharing their work and learning together. We are particularly open to forms of practice-based research and transdisciplinary approaches.

Areas of interest include:
- modes of listening, from speculative to decolonial
- rhythms: multi-sensorial practices of worlding
- sonic agency and emergent forms of resistance
- radio in times of confinement
