March 12 - 18, 2023: The Listening Academy is an independent research academy focusing on listening as a philosophical, artistic, social and somatic issue. This entails a relation to sonic, performative and ecological practices, sound studies research, and experimental pedagogy. The Academy offers a generative and nurturing framework for researchers and practitioners to engage in collaborative exchange and the sharing of knowledge, as well as workshopping new directions in sound studies and related issues and practices. This includes bringing together individual approaches and work, and creating opportunities for material exploration and building new collaborations.

For the Cairo edition, planned for March 2023, we invite artists and researchers to come together in a free and open manner, to meet and share work, and to explore meetings points and common interests. We hope that such an open framework can support a diversity of individual approaches, as well as nurture forms of transdisciplinary exchange, where we can think together around pertinent questions and issues. The week-long workshop includes identifying paths of shared interest, which we can explore through both theoretical research and material testing. This can include visiting sites in the city, making audio recordings or undertaking other exerices in listening. By sharing and working together, we’re interested in finding out how listening can impact onto creative and critical practices, as well as key questions within the context of the city.
